Motto: Be Fearless. Be Feared.
The Hacienda Heights Rugby Football
club is a non-profit organisation in its
fifth full season. The club is dedicated
to the promotion of rugby to the youth in
Southern California and as a whole, the
United States. We offer teams, in High
school boys and girls, Under 16 and
14s boys and girls, boys full contact
under 12s as well as co-ed U-8 and
U-10 non contact. We are proud
members of Southern California Youth
Rugby.
History:
2004:
The Phantoms only fielded a co-ed U-15
team while still being known only as
Cedarlane Rugby. The season started off
shaky with a loss and win against the Lakes
Wildcats and a loss against Fullerton. Soon
afterward, C.J. Marin met Jen Dodge, who
was at the time coaching the team by herself,
and it must have been great chemistry
between coaches and players because after
that, The Phantoms (Cedarlane) did not
loose another game and capped off their
season with a win against the team that C.J.
was playing for at the time, the Fullerton
Lions.
2005:
2005 had been a year of expansion to say
the least for the team. With enough numbers
in the girls category, a U-15 girls team was
offered for the first time, and lost only one
non-tournament game. The boys finished the
season ranked number 4 in So. Cal with a
record of 7-3 with losses against the
Wildcats, Mustangs, and Lions, however the
score was a win for a win with the Wildcats.
Phantoms HS squad went through
tremendous difficulty through its maiden
season with practice difficulties (with the
wettest weather in CA history) and managed
no wins on the season, but managed their
first 3 tries in the last two games. First try:
Jesse Villejo, 2nd: Richard Rivera,
3rd: Cpt C.J. Marin
2006:
In 2006, the SCRFU finally put together an
official league structure for the youth rugby.
The high school boys team, again captained
by C.J. Marin in his final year playing with the
club, managed to get their first wins in the
history of the club despite a coaching change
midway through the season. One win
included a new tradition for phantoms rugby,
which is the annual "Friday Night Game". The
U-16s managed to qualify for playoffs and
took the trek down to SLO and narrowly
missed victory. The U-14s made it to the final
4 in the playoffs and lost, ending the season
3rd in southern california.
2007:
Improvements were abound as nearly every
team finished the season with a winning
record. U14s had the best record with only 1
loss and 12 wins, they were denied entry into
the championship weekend. However, the
Varsity girls team had a terrific season as well
and finished an incredible third place in
southern california.  As the club continued to
grow, it became evident that a board of
directors would be needed. At the end of the
season, the board was officially enacted to
coincide with its new constitution.
2008:
Every team was on the up slope. The varsity
boys team for the first time had a winning
record. Just after the start of the season, the
La Mirada Mutineers joined with the
Phantoms and severely bolstered the teams
roster. Since the Mutes have a mens club
attached to them, thus giving a huge boost to
future prospects of the club. Also for the first
time, the team won a Conference
championship when the U14 boys team went
undefeated leading up to playoffs. After the
season was over, C.J. Marin stepped down
as president since he moved to northern
california to work as a firefigher.
